We love Belize as an off-the-beaten path honeymoon spot. It’s close (just below Mexico) and easy to get to, with plentiful connections from the U.S. The offshore islands like Ambergris Caye and Robert’s Caye are reknowned for snorkeling and diving, but if you stick to the coast you miss half of the country’s beauty. That’s why we suggest combining beach time with jungle time at one of our fave romantic hotels, Blancaneaux Lodge.

We fell in love with this hotel on our first trip to Belize, almost 10 years ago. It’s set in the Cayo District in northwest Belize, home to ancient Mayan ruins, cave systems ideal for climbing and swimming, and jungle paths for hiking. The resort itself is the epitome of jungle chic, with thatched-roof cabanas set along a river. Everything is exquisitely designed, which makes sense considering who the owner is: Hollywoord director Francis Ford Coppola. Rooms and public spaces are filled with an eclectic array textiles and artwork sourced by the Coppolas during their travels through Central America and beyond. Couldn’t you see this lobby as a movie set?

The great design continues in the cabanas, each uniquely designed and set along the river. Honeymoon cabanas are set at the farther end of the property for maximum privacy, with cozy interiors, airy thatched roofs and screened porches overlooking the jungle.

If you want to get a little closer to nature, head down to your own little lawn, complete with lawn chairs and room service.

We’re suckers for a great outdoor shower, and every cabana has them.

Upgrade to a Deluxe Cabana and you’ll get the ultimate honeymoon perk: your own private plunge pool. Seriously, how sweet is this?!

Socializing happens at the Jungle Bar, where guests gather for cocktails, sharing tales of their adventures. The vibe is friendly but mellow; people are here to relax and connect with nature, not party.

Want something a little more private? Arrange for a candlelit dinner in the riverside gazebo.
There’s also a sweet little pool…

And spa treatments at the Balinese-style spa, with therapists trained in Thai massage at the Coppolas’ request.

The whole thing adds up to an unexpected romantic escape that pairs perfectly with a few days at the beach — that is, if you want to leave at all.
