Globetrotter: Photographer Laura Grier on Romantic Bali

Photographer Laura Grier is always on the move — be it shooting destination weddings and engagement shoots around the world with her company Beautiful Day Photography, or capturing the work of indigenous craftspeople in developing countries with NOVICA/National Geographic. As much as she likes to go someplace new, she also keeps returning to one special place: Bali, Indonesia. Here is her take from her most recent trip there, and the honeymoon-perfect hotel she fell in love with. Bali always feels like home, every time I land here. There is something nostalgic and romantic about being here. It’s like how a certain smell or song can bringLearn more

Globetrotter: Destination Wedding Photographer Donna Von Bruening in Maui

Savannah-based destination wedding photographer Donna Von Bruening is on the road a lot, and we love keeping up with her travels. She recently returned from Maui, Hawaii, where she was shooting a birthday party at Montage Kapalua Bay. She managed to snap a few shots for us in her downtime; here’s her report.  “Earlier this fall, work brought me to the shores of Maui’s Kapalua Bay for a week at the exclusive Montage Resort. I was in good company, there with top event designer Luke Wilson of Luke Wilson Special Events in Charleston and NYC. Our first day revolved around an intimate birthday dinnerLearn more

Globetrotter: Bernadette Smith of Gay Wedding Institute on Why She Loves Riviera Maya

Our friend Bernadette Smith has long been a leader in same-sex weddings. She started planning same-sex weddings in 2004 with her company 14 Stories, and has written three books on the topic. When legalization began sweeping across the country, she wanted to bring her passion and knowledge to other planners. So in 2009 she founded the Gay Wedding Institute, which works with individual planners and travel corporations like Marriott, teaching them all how to best serve their same-sex clientele. Bernadette travels a lot for work, educating on same-sex wedding planning, but when she needs a break, Riviera Maya, Mexico isLearn more

Globetrotter: Photographer Donna von Bruening in romantic San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Photographer Donna von Bruening recently traveled to one of our favorite places: San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Set in the highlands 170 miles north of Mexico City, SMA is an artist’s haven, with cobblestone streets and marble-fronted buildings dating back to the 1700s. The atmosphere makes it an amazing spot for destination weddings. Donna was there for the Celebration of the Birthday of General Allende, a street party in honor of the town’s founder. Here is the city through her eyes: We stayed at Casa Hyder (aka Casa Elegantes), an 11-bedroom compound that belongs to art collector.  It is comprised of three homes, and everywhere you turnLearn more

Globetrotter: Thailand’s Coolest Honeymoon Hotel

The latest rage in travel is private homes-turned-hotels. No, not Airbnb — we’ll save that debate for another post. This a whole other caliber: fully-vetted exquisite private homes that give you the run of the place along with top-notch hotel style services. One of the best is Howie’s HomeStay, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Our pal Laura Grier of Beautiful Day Photography and Wanderlust by Laura Grier recently stayed there, and sent us these gorgeous images and some thoughts on the experience. “Recently, I went on a wild 5-week world tour photographing two weddings, two engagement shoots and two National Geographic/NOVICA catalog shoots. During this epic adventure, I stayed for 5 days inLearn more

Globetrotter: A Secret Greek Isle Perfect for a Low-Key Destination Wedding

With the dollar on the upswing against the Euro, there’s no better time to have a destination wedding abroad. We love the Greek Isles, so when wedding planner Kasey Conyers of Bliss Event Design in Columbus, Ohio told us about her visit to the tiny Greek isle of Amorgos, we wanted to hear more! Here’s her story, along with photos from Amanda Julca. “I love traveling, I always have” says Kasey, who is launching Bliss Event Co. Destinations this year. “It’s an extension of Bliss Wedding & Event Design,” say Kasey, “but we’re taking our planning and design work around the globe!” What brought you to Greece?Learn more

Globetrotter: Inside Mark Ingram’s Miami

When it comes to style, few people have it like the dapper Mark Ingram, owner of Mark Ingram Atelier in New York City. This exclusive bridal salon sells gorgeous, high-end gowns from the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Inbal Dror and Zuhair Murad. But Mark has another love beyond fashion: the city of Miami. Mark spends a lot of time there, and since purchasing a condo along the Venetian Causeway in 2010, considers it his second home.  We live in Florida so we know and live this city too. Here are his must-do’s when he heads south,Learn more

Meet Our Favorite Wedding Registry

One of the best parts about having a wedding (besides the whole “found your soulmate” part, of course) is doing your wedding registry. After all, when else in life do you get to choose what you really want and need in a gift? Our favorite wedding registry hands down is Newlywish whose well-curated offerings include gorgeous household items alongside cool experiences like cooking classes and African safaris. We were thrilled when founder Amanda Allen asked us to create our dream registry, and had a ball going through their ever-expanding inventory. The results include some travel picks, of course, but also a gold-flecked vase that reminds us of coral reefs and the cutestLearn more

Unique Luxury Destination Wedding Spot in Tuscany

We’re always on the lookout for unique destination wedding spots. So when we recently got the invitation to travel to Tuscany with David Beahm, we couldn’t pass it up! Not only is David one of the top event designers in the U.S., he is an old-school gentleman with exquisite taste. So when he said we needed to see a hotel, we knew it would be special! A hilltop town-turned-hotel, Monteverdi Tuscany is in Castiglioncello del Trinoro, near Chiusi. The Italian-American owners fell in love with the medieval-era town and started buying and renovating apartments. The result: A one-of-a-kind hotel spread throughout the town, home to approximately 10 full-time residents. As a guest,Learn more

The Coolest Guesthouse in Hudson Valley, NY

One of our favorite things about traveling is the people we meet on the road. We met Shannon Greer at a magazine job, where we traveled from Maine to Puerto Rico doing elaborate wedding photo shoots. You really get to know someone when you work that closely with someone (5 am call times, hectic scouting days), and we fell in love with Shannon’s laid-back demeanor, sense of humor and great style. So when he said he and his artist partner Charlotta Janssen (who also runs the restaurant Chez Oskar in Brooklyn) were restoring a historic building in NY’s Hudson Valley andLearn more
